Pure Power Studio

Pure Power Studio Interview

There’s a unique, new trend in the fitness world and it involves hanging from the ceiling.

Pure Power Studio in West Ocean City, MD offers a multitude of Aerial Fitness classes. The classes are available to anyone and everyone and range from pole classes to aerial dance classes.

“It’s a unique and alternative approach to fitness that powers both the mind and the body.” Owner of Pure Power Studio, Angela Houck said.

Houck opened up the studio after searching for a new way to get in shape after having her two children. She said she had tried out a pole dancing class and loved how powerful she felt afterwards, pushing her to open up her own studio.

Aerial Fitness involves lifting oneself off the ground onto a silk swing. From there, one uses acrobatic movement and physical fitness to pull their body upwards in different rhythmic motions.

“Aerial Fitness is a total body workout all the time,” Lee Davison, a regular at Pure Power Studio said. “You end up doing stuff you never dreamed you’d be able to do.”

Most of the regulars in the Pure Power Studio said that they began getting into Aerial Fitness on a whim and haven’t been back to a regular gym since.

“I started off with little flexibility and little upper body strength but now I feel strong, powerful and very flexible.” Dolores Nagler, another regular at the studio said.

Houck said that she has noticed mainstream awareness for Aerial Fitness growing and is proud to have been the first Aerial Fitness Studio on the Eastern Shore.

As the class begins, Daly and Nagler work hard to stay still and not shake in this position. “At first it was challenging but now it comes naturally to me.” Nagler said.

Oksana’s Produce Farm

Every Tuesday afternoon, farmers from all over the state of Maryland sell their products at the Farmer’s Market in the Asbury United Methodist Church parking lot in Salisbury.

One of the numerous vendors includes Oksana’s Produce Farm, a farm located in Chestertown, who grows and sells some of the freshest produce Maryland can offer.

Oksana’s Produce Farm grows a diverse mix of vegetables and herbs across 7 acres of land. The farm focuses on feeding their soil with nutrients in order to ensure that the produce is high quality.

The Oksana’s Produce Farm stand at the Farmer’s Market is run by the King siblings, Helen and Jacob. The brother and sister duo have been driving from Chestertown to Salisbury every Tuesday for almost two years, Helen said.

“I don’t mind the long drive if it means that we can bring locally grown produce to people every week,” Jacob King said.

Oksana’s Produce Farm sets itself apart from store bought produce because it is always picked fresh on the same day that it is sold, Jacob said.

“I think that eating local is always the best decision,” Helen King said. “We always say that buying organic is a direct investment in the future of our food system which means it’s a choice that the customer can actually feel good about.”

In addition to the fresh produce, Oksana’s Farmer’s Market stand also offers a variety of pre-packaged fermented vegetables, salsa and apple-cranberry sauerkraut.

Eating Healthier in the Commons

Upon entering college, many students struggle to adjust to eating in a dining hall and avoiding the freshman fifteen.

Salisbury University’s nutritionist, Terry Passano, is available to help students navigate their way around The Commons in order to instill healthier eating habits.

“I think students gain the freshman fifteen due to lack of knowledge on what’s healthy versus what’s not,” Passano said. “I have a lot of students come to me and they don’t even know where to begin with eating healthy.”

The Commons has started offering healthier options which also includes vegan alternatives, Passano said. Students need to focus on loading up on vegetables and lean proteins.

Head Chef, John Lakatosh, has been working with Passano in order to add healthier options to the menu in The Commons.

“We have tried to re-amp our menu in order to better cater to the students desires to eat healthier.” Lakatosh said.

In addition to adding healthier options to the menu, Passano and Lakatosh have been working together to host events that get students excited about eating healthy.

The most recent event was a smoothie station set up at the entrance of The Commons where Passano and Lakatosh handed out fruit smoothie samples to students.

Both Passano and Lakatosh are available for health consultations with students, free of charge.

The Secret Garden

Arianna Darling has many memories of the secret garden, but yet has only ever been there one time.

Darling said that she had heard about a secret garden on Salisbury University’s campus while on a trip to Canada with some of her friends.

“They told us that an old man started the garden and he was the only one who would keep it up but he eventually died of old age,” Darling said. “At first no one took care of it so everything died. Then a bunch of students got together in memory of him and replanted everything.”

After hearing the history of the secret garden, Darling and her friends began their search. After a month of searching, everyone began to give up hope but Darling never stopped looking.

Then, one day Darling’s friend told her that he wanted to show her a really cool place and brought her to the secret garden.

“It was literally a journey and it was really exciting to think that there was a place that was a secret on campus. It was so thrilling to finally find it and it gave it so much more meaning than a regular garden.” Darling said.

Two years later, Darling found herself back at the secret garden. It was just as hard and exciting to find as it was the first time, Darling said.
